It’s been a pretty busy week on the Dolby Atmos front and to some extent also on the Ultra HD Blu-ray side. If there’s anyone still doubting that Dolby is winning the format war on UHD, I think there’s less and less doubts. Amazing how the year of delay that happened with DTS:X changed the landscape completely.
Here are the new titles announced this week.
Passengers
The science-fiction movie has been confirmed by Sony on Ultra HD Blu-ray, no date yet. Because it’s Sony, we can confirm it will have a Dolby Atmos track as all their UHD titles do.
Inferno
The action movie from the Dan Brown book will be released on UHD Blu-ray on January 24 with a Dolby Atmos soundtrack.
Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk
Already confirmed on UHD Blu-ray, the title from Sony now has a release date of February 14 and will feature a Dolby Atmos track.
Hacksaw Ridge
The war movie will be released by Lionsgate on February 21 with a Dolby Atmos track on both the Blu-ray and Ultra HD releases.
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back
Finally, the Tom Cruise starring movie from Paramount will be released on January 31 with Atmos on both the Blu-ray and UHD Blu-ray.
again.. NO DTS mix 🙁
Yeah, Dolby is clearly leading the charge this generation. But honestly, why do you care ? Technically DTS:X and Atmos are based on the exact same approach and right now Atmos has less limitations on the current receivers.
Atmos or DTS X are equally great, but can we be honest here, Dolby definitely has a better name scheme here, Atmos just “sounds” awesome. 😉 Now, I just can’t wait for Disney to start releasing Marvel and Star Wars titles in Dolby Atmos & HDR. What are they waiting for…. Christmas? Sadly, I think they are.
Yeah, Disney are supposedly waiting 4K to join the Atmos/DTS:X parade, but then they are slow on jumping on board with 4K… Disney will always be Disney 😐
